Print your own T-shirt with screen printing
Create your own screen printing stencil and print on textiles yourself with ease.
With screen printing, you can print T-shirts yourself at home, even without a machine, if you want to. This is possible with a simple screen printing starter set for T-shirts. Especially for beginners, single-color printing is great because you need little space and the basics are very simple. After all, screen printing is printing with a stencil.
After just a few attempts, you can design your own individual T-shirts, for example for your own brand, your band, or as a personal DIY project. Screen printing is ideal for small runs, as the costs remain manageable and you can work flexibly.
Print your own designs directly on T-shirts.
Screen printing is a stencil printing process that can be done yourself. For this purpose, the stencil is created on the mesh of a screen printing frame using a liquid. After drying, the liquid is simply exposed with UV light. The exposed parts remain in the stencil, while the unexposed parts are washed out with water.
General information on screen printing can be found under "What is screen printing" and step-by-step instructions for DIY screen printing can be found in our Screen Printing Guide for Beginners.
Screen printing for beginners, with or without a machine
In screen printing, a screen printing frame is exposed for each printing ink, which can then be printed on various materials with a manual screen printing machine or a screen printing carousel for multi-color prints. This can include T-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies. However, other textile prints are also entirely possible. For example, other cotton and cotton blend fabrics can also be reliably and durably printed directly. You can, for example, print jute bags and tote bags. You can also print jeans. Even printing on polyester is possible.
Especially for beginners or a small print run, screen printing is easily possible even without a machine. So you can start small and expand at any time later.

Direct start: With a complete screen printing starter set, you have all the materials together right away and can start printing T-shirts immediately.
Both printing techniques (linocut and screen printing) are suitable for producing single and multi-color prints on T-shirts. However, single-color screen printing is the easiest and fastest, as you can expose the stencil yourself more quickly than creating a linocut. Indeed, very little material and space are required for single-color screen printing, so even beginners can get started right away, and that too without an expensive machine.
If you already know that you want to print in multiple colors from the start, a larger set with a screen printing carousel and dryer is a good option. This allows you to print larger quantities in multiple colors right away. These can be T-shirts for a club or band shirts.
We have different ink systems in our assortment for T-shirt printing. Firstly, water-based screen printing ink, which is easy to process and easy to clean from all equipment. With our ink system, very good opacity is achieved, especially on light textiles. But of course, opaque prints can also be achieved on dark fabrics.
Alternatively, we offer plastisol ink, which is plastic-based. This printing ink provides extremely opaque prints on textiles, but it must always be dried at 140-150°C after printing to set, as plastisol ink cannot air dry. So, a dryer is needed here.

Instructions for the Printed T-Shirt
To get started with screen printing, our screen printing kits are ideal for printing your own T-shirts. For example, you can start with a small screen printing kit for screen prints up to A4 format, perfect for a small print run and low costs.
Time required: For your first print, you should allow approx. 1-2 hours (including preparation and drying). After some practice, it will be much faster. Please note that the screen printing frame coated with photo emulsion is best dried at room temperature (ideally overnight and always stored in the dark). Alternatively, you can dry the coated frame with a hairdryer, keeping sufficient distance so that the layer does not get hot.
There are several options for printing T-shirts. If you only want to print a few shirts (perhaps up to 10), we recommend a small kit, i.e. the A4 kit or the Starter Kit A3. If you want to print larger series right away, we recommend our Screen Printing Pro Kit or the Expert Kit with two screen printing frames.
Please refer to our screen printing instructions under "DIY Screen Printing" to familiarize yourself with screen printing. This provides the basics for stencil creation.
Once you have created your first stencil for T-shirt printing, you can simply clamp the screen printing frame into the screen clamps and start printing if you are using the screen printing starter set. If you are using the small A4 set, you can place the frame directly on the shirt; this means you can print completely without a screen printing machine. To protect the back of the textile, please place a piece of cardboard inside the shirt so that the screen printing ink does not bleed through to the back.
Then, apply a full-width layer of ink to the frame and squeegee it through the design 1–2 times. Simply pull the screen printing squeegee with a little pressure across the entire width of the frame so that the ink is pressed evenly through the screen printing mesh.
Avoiding typical mistakes: Too much ink (print becomes blurred), too little pressure (print is not complete) or a poorly exposed screen often lead to untidy results. In our experience, the number 1 source of error is the use of a poor printing template (opacity on the screen printing film is not high enough). This then leads to the stencil being exposed where it should not be. Conclusion: Make sure that your motif is always printed deep black on the screen printing film.
The print then needs to air dry. If you are using water-based screen printing ink, the ink can air dry, but should then be ironed again from the reverse side after drying to make the prints washable. Our cold fixer for screen printing inks ensures improved wash resistance even without subsequent ironing.
If you have already purchased a set with a screen printing machine, printing is even more comfortable, as you can place T-shirts and other textiles directly on the printing plate of the screen printing machine. This significantly minimizes the cost per printed T-shirt, as you can print over 150-200 shirts completely with just 1 kg of screen printing ink.
Conclusion: Screen printing is one of the most flexible methods for printing T-shirts yourself, whether for a small print run, a DIY project, or your own brand. You can re-expose your screen printing frames with new designs again and again, because the photo emulsion can be removed from the exposed screen using a remover. You can start small and increase your capabilities step by step.

Solution: Squeegee the ink through the screen multiple times, or pre-dry layers of ink with an intermediate dryer and then overprint.
